Devotion

Today while listening to a radio program, in the Classical Music Station, where they were interviewing the creator of a play called "Simple Acts of Devotion;" I started thinking that one of the things we need to learn in life is to become more "devoted" individuals. Not only in a religious or spiritual kind of way, but also in general - in the way we live. The dictionary defines "devotion" as "profound dedication," "adherence to something to which one is bound by a pledge or duty," "a feeling of strong or constant regard for and dedication to someone or something," and "belief and trust in and loyalty to God." We should ask ourselves if we are truly "devoted" persons: are we devoted to our family, to our school, to our job (work), to our friends, to our country, to a good cause, to life? Are we devoted to the improvement of ourselves, so that we can become kinder, friendlier, more loving, forgiving, understanding, patient, compassionate, and tolerant human beings?

Good questions to ponder. Devotion is like passion in many ways. Passion: "a strong or extravagant fondness, enthusiasm, or desire for anything" - a passion for music. We should strongly desire to become passionate about living, and dedicated to a cause greater than ourselves; to be the best that we can be; to treat others as we want others to treat us; to work loving what we do - even if we have the kind of job where we cannot love every aspect of it (but we can try our best); to find and always look for the best in every situation and in every person. Not easy things to do, but a great challenge: to become "devoted" to life and to live passionately with a grateful heart, no matter what!

What are you devoted to? I am definitely devoted to my family, my friends, my students, my job, my dog... Devoted to taking care of the environment and appreciating nature... Devoted to improving and taking care of myself... Devoted to God and the awesome mystery of life... Devoted to finding meaning and purpose in my life... Devoted to creative pursuits... Devoted to finding and embracing happiness... Devoted to peace and justice...
